The Real Cost of Snowflake vs Databricks vs BigQuery in 2026
Everybody asks 'which data warehouse is cheapest?' but that's the wrong question. Here's what actually determines your bill.

If you've ever tried to estimate your annual data warehouse bill before signing a contract, you know that pricing pages for cloud data warehouses are designed to confuse, not inform. Snowflake talks about credits, Databricks about DBUs, BigQuery about slots — and somehow every vendor's calculator produces a number that makes them look like the cheapest option.
The question most teams ask first is always the same: "Which one is cheapest?" It's the wrong question. The right question is: "Which pricing model makes my costs predictable given how my team actually works?"
Let me explain what that means in practice.
Three Pricing Models, Three Philosophies
Snowflake, Databricks, and BigQuery aren't just different products — they represent fundamentally different philosophies about how you should pay for computation. (Numbers below reflect public list pricing as of Q1 2026; check the vendor pricing pages for the latest rates.)
Snowflake charges by the second for virtual warehouses (their compute clusters) and separately for storage. You pick a warehouse size, it spins up when you run queries, and you pay for every second it's running. Databricks uses "Databricks Units" (DBUs), similar to credits but priced differently depending on whether you're running SQL queries, data engineering jobs, or ML workloads. A DBU for SQL Serverless is around $0.22, while an all-purpose compute DBU is $0.55. BigQuery offers two models: on-demand (pay per TB scanned) and capacity-based (reserved slots at a flat monthly rate). On-demand is $6.25 per TB scanned — straightforward, until you realize a poorly written query against a 50TB table can burn through hundreds of dollars in seconds. Every vendor loves to show you the compute cost per hour. What they're less eager to discuss is everything else.
Data egress is the silent killer. Moving data out of any cloud provider costs money, and if your warehouse lives in AWS but your BI tool runs in GCP, those cross-cloud transfer fees add up fast. Snowflake on AWS charges standard AWS egress rates — $0.09/GB for cross-region transfers. Over a year, a team that moves a few TB monthly between clouds can easily spend $10,000+ just on data movement. That number never shows up in any vendor's calculator.
Storage costs look trivial until they aren't. Snowflake charges about $23/TB/month for on-demand storage (or $40 including Time Travel and Fail-safe). Cheap, when you're starting out. But warehouses have a funny way of growing. You start with 500GB, and two years later you're sitting on 50TB of historical data that nobody queries but nobody wants to delete either — because the one time you do need it will be the day after you drop the table. Snowflake's Premier support is 10–14% of your annual spend. Databricks' Premium support is similar. BigQuery's premium support is bundled into Google Cloud's support tiers, which start at $29/month and go up to $12,500+ per month for Premium.
Governance and compliance add-ons can shift the equation significantly. Snowflake's Business Critical edition (required for HIPAA and PCI compliance) costs roughly 2x Standard. Startup: 5 analysts, moderate queries, 1–5 TB
BigQuery on-demand is almost always cheapest here. You're scanning small amounts of data, you don't have the query volume to justify reserved capacity, and the pay-per-scan model means you pay nothing during quiet periods. Expect $200–800/month. Snowflake costs more because even a small warehouse burns credits when running, and unless you're disciplined about auto-suspend settings, you'll overpay. Mid-market: 20–30 analysts and engineers, heavy daily ETL, 20–100 TB
This is where it gets interesting, and where "which is cheapest" genuinely has no universal answer. If your workloads are predictable and mostly SQL, Snowflake works well — you can right-size warehouses and schedule jobs to minimize concurrency. If you're running a mix of SQL analytics and Spark-based data engineering, Databricks starts making more sense. At this scale you're negotiating custom contracts, and the list prices above are fiction. Enterprises routinely land 40–60% discounts on committed spend. The real cost differentiator isn't the compute price per hour — it's total cost of ownership: engineering time for optimization, infrastructure management, and vendor lock-in risk. Choose BigQuery if you're deep in Google Cloud, your workloads are spiky and unpredictable, or you're a smaller team that needs simplicity above all. The most expensive data warehouse isn't the one with the highest price per credit. It's the one your team spends three months migrating to before discovering it doesn't support the one feature they actually needed.
